Hot Water Issues in Winter on the Sunshine Coast

Why Hot Water Systems Struggle in Winter

Winter is when your hot water system works the hardest.

As the temperature drops, the water entering your system is much colder. This means your hot water system needs to use more energy to heat water to the same temperature you’re used to.

If you’ve noticed your hot water isn’t lasting as long, isn’t as hot, or has stopped working altogether, you’re not alone. These are some of the most common hot water issues we see across the Sunshine Coast during winter.

Common Hot Water Problems in Winter

Hot Water Isn’t Getting Hot Enough

If your water isn’t as hot as it used to be, there are a few common causes.

Thermostat or gas control issues
Electric systems rely on a thermostat, while gas systems use a control valve. If either of these aren’t working properly, your water temperature will drop.

Heat loss through pipes
Exposed or uninsulated pipes can lose heat quickly in colder weather, meaning the water cools before it reaches your taps.

System location
Outdoor systems or those in colder areas can struggle more in winter, especially without proper insulation.

Sometimes a simple adjustment can help, but if the issue continues, it’s best to have it checked properly.

No Hot Water at All

This is one of the most common winter call-outs.

Electric systems
A failed heating element is often the cause. These wear out over time and can stop working without warning.

Gas systems
If your pilot light goes out or there’s an issue with the gas supply, your system won’t heat water at all.

If your system has completely stopped, it’s best to have it checked sooner rather than later, especially during winter when demand is higher.

Running Out of Hot Water Faster

If your hot water runs out quicker than normal, it could be due to:

  • Increased usage during colder weather
  • Sediment buildup inside the tank
  • A system that is undersized for your household

Over time, sediment can build up inside storage tanks, reducing efficiency and capacity.

Strange Noises from Your System

Hearing popping or rumbling sounds?

This is often caused by sediment buildup inside the tank. As water heats, it gets trapped under the sediment and creates noise.

This can lead to:

  • Reduced efficiency
  • Higher energy bills
  • Increased risk of tank failure

Solar Hot Water Not Performing

Solar hot water systems can struggle in winter due to reduced sunlight.

To improve performance:

  • Ensure your booster (electric or gas) is working
  • Keep panels clean
  • Check insulation on exposed pipes

Signs Your Hot Water System Might Be Failing

Keep an eye out for:

  • Rust or corrosion on the tank
  • Water leaking around the system
  • Inconsistent water temperature
  • Reduced hot water supply
  • System age (most last 8 to 12 years)

These are often early signs your system may need repair or replacement.

When to Repair or Replace Your Hot Water System

If your system is:

  • Older
  • Breaking down frequently
  • Struggling to keep up in winter

It may be more cost-effective to replace it rather than continue repairing it.

Upgrading to a newer system can:

  • Improve efficiency
  • Lower running costs
  • Provide more consistent hot water
