What To Do When Your Hot Water System Stops Working

No Hot Water? Here’s What To Do First

There’s nothing worse than stepping into the shower and realising the hot water isn’t working, especially during winter.

If your hot water system has stopped working, leaking, or not performing properly, it’s important to act quickly. Small issues can turn into bigger problems if left too long.

Here are the key steps to take if your hot water system breaks down.

1. Turn Your Hot Water System Off

If you notice leaks, unusual noises, or your system has completely stopped working, the first step is to turn it off.

For electric systems, switch it off at the power supply.
For gas systems, turn off the gas supply.

If there’s water leaking, you may also need to shut off the water supply to prevent further damage.

This helps avoid:

  • Water damage
  • Increased energy bills
  • Further damage to the system

2. Check for Obvious Signs of Damage

Before calling anyone, take a quick look at your system.

Look for:

  • Rust or corrosion on the tank
  • Water pooling around the base
  • Drips or active leaks
  • Unusual noises

These are common signs your hot water system may be failing.

3. Try to Identify the Issue

Hot water systems usually show warning signs before they completely stop working.

Some common causes include:

Heating element failure (electric systems)
Over time, heating elements wear out and stop working.

Gas supply or ignition issues
If your gas system isn’t igniting properly, it won’t heat water.

Thermostat problems
Incorrect or faulty thermostat settings can affect water temperature.

System age
Most systems last around 8 to 12 years. If yours is older, it may be reaching the end of its life.

4. Avoid Trying to Fix It Yourself

It can be tempting to try and fix the issue yourself, but hot water systems involve electricity, gas, and pressure.

Trying to repair it without the right experience can:

  • Make the problem worse
  • Void warranties
  • Create safety risks

If you suspect a gas issue, turn off the supply and contact a professional immediately.

5. Call a Licensed Plumber

The safest and most reliable option is to have your system checked by a licensed plumber.

At Ripple Plumbing and Gas, we can:

  • Diagnose the issue quickly
  • Repair your system where possible
  • Recommend replacement options if needed

We’ll always give honest advice so you can make the right decision for your home.

Repair or Replace Your Hot Water System?

Sometimes a repair is all that’s needed. Other times, replacing the system is the more cost-effective option.

You may want to consider replacing your system if:

  • It’s over 8 to 10 years old
  • It’s leaking or rusting
  • You’re running out of hot water regularly
  • Repairs are becoming frequent

Upgrading your system can improve efficiency, reliability, and running costs.
